Gamescom is on in Germany and Sony started with pretty good conference with the main focus being their business strategies rather than game announcements and it seems pretty clear that Sony are ready to get back into the fight over consumers once more with the announcement of a Playstation 3 Slim and a $100/€100 price drop taking affect both with the new Slim PS3 which will be arriving during the first week of September, as well as any older model currently on the market. I guess most would call this long overdo but since I already own a PS3 the novelty for me is purely aesthetic in that I find the new PS3 Slim cheap looking with it's lack of piano black dust collecting finish.

Now what really spiked my interest is the new firmware 3.00 update which appears to have some cool features. In general I like the Microsoft inspired new connectivity with the Playstation Store that they seem to be going for and in general they finally seem to be streamlining the PSN experience and it's long over-due. Still I am I let down by the failure to even mention anything about cross-game party chat and cross-game invites but there is still hope that it might be just around the corner. One thing that I'm really looking forward too with the new update are the dynamic custom themes and I can't wait to see what kind of awesome themes creative people will bring out. A short video about the new update is linked in the image below for your viewing pleasure.

There really weren't that many announcements today by Sony but many of them seemed at least interesting, one of the big things for me was to find out that VidZone will finally make it to Sweden this fall. VidZone is basically a service where you can stream music videos and seems like a great feature to have at parties if it actually works well. The other big thing for me was that the video store is finally coming to Europe towards the end of this year but the downside for me is that Sweden sucks and will be getting it sometime next year; hopefully in the beginning. Other than that I'm excited with the stuff coming to the PSP like the Minis - bite-sized short games for those time when you want to play something while you're doing number two. I'm also curious about the digital comics coming to PSP through the Playstation Store and I'm hoping the pricing is not a total rip-off and the damn things are actually readable.
