I forgot to blog about the fact that I finally got my hands on Ico a few days back mainly because I was too immersed into Prince of Persia as well as being pretty busy studying math so this place kind of fell a few notches on my priority list. However now that Prince of Persia has been completed I actually got around to opening up my brand new expensive copy of Ico and got to play for about thirty minutes. First impressions were that the graphics were much more outdated than say Shadow of the Colossus, but they were not totally horrible. Once I got control over the characters you could feel that this was an old game with an annoying last gen camera and a floaty sense of the character. I was let down initially I must admit and for the first ten minutes I regretted putting out so much money for something that I felt hadn't aged that well.
Then something happened, I met Yorda and the unique Team Ico-vibe instantly set into overdrive. It was absolutely charming to see these two characters interact and I loved that they couldn't understand each other due to Yorda speaking in some mysterious language. It really reminisced of my childhood experience coming to Sweden and still managing to make some friends despite not understanding a word of Swedish. This is where Ico really shines as a game, you really feel the childhood of these two characters, the innocence of only expecting good in another child and yes, it is extremely moving to experience this even at my age. The other thing I noticed was the heavy theme of displacement in the game where you really feel the isolation of this castle and how you're thrown into it with no information or back story to the events. This really made the first ten minutes downright uncomfortable and I think that was the point because it made the meeting with Yorda so much more reassuring and I almost felt myself sigh with relief despite knowing that she would be in the game.
The gameplay mechanic of holding hands with Yorda and guiding her through the level while at the same time protecting her works extremely well and really doesn't feel like an annoying chore, mainly because you actually care about her. Otherwise the gameplay in general seems to be much more of a puzzle-solving game than say Shadow of the Colossus but since I'm in the beginning of the game I haven't actually experienced any hard or annoying puzzles. The basic structure of the game seems to be very simple but what really stood out was the immersion I felt with the setting and the characters despite graphics that can only be called outdated. I think that it's because of the small details, like the menus being kept to a minimum and the simple act of saving is made into something special because you save the game by simply sitting down on a bench with Yorda. In conclusion I'm really looking forward to getting to know this game some more but so far it feels really great and special. I'll be sure to blog some more about it once I finish the game, hopefully soon but it might take some time since I'm quite busy this month.

Sounds like a great game and well worth the expense and hassle to get it. You have decent taste after all. *noworry* <3
My taste is sublime! >[
<3
sounds like an awesome game, but it's so sad when games doesn't age well. some games can really stand the test of time though, which is great ^^
looking forward to reading more about your adventure in Ico land. ^___^
PC games do a much better job staying top notch throughout the years due to mods and new graphic tricks with new graphics cards. It's too bad that old console games from the PS2 era don't get a bump on the PS3 hardware. I guess there is always hope that they might include PS3 HD versions of Ico and SotC in the collectors edition of The Last Guardian since Ueda has expressed that he would be interested in doing something like that.
Yeah, I'll try to write some proper impressions once I get to run through the game but it's going to be hard since I'll be busy til the 24th this month and by then I'll probably have both Uncharted 2 and Demon's Souls in my hands.
indeed they do. plus games during the ps1/N64 and some ps2/xbox1 games suffered from the suckiness that new 3D games suffered during that period (clumsy cameras, bad controls due to 3D enviroment, blocky graphics etc).
what? math exams? or worse? :0
"...month and by then I'll probably have both Uncharted 2 and Demon's Souls in my hands."
you mean Uncharted 2, demons souls and Ofp2+xbl Gold >:]
I'm doing Högskoleprovet on the 24th so I'm busy until then and after that I'm going down to Ronneby and will be there for around a week but I'm bringing the TREY along so that shouldn't affect my gaming. I'll probably get Uncharted 2 and Demon's Souls sometime next week I think and then I'm broke so probably no Flashpoint 2 or Live for a while.
oh shi-
all right, I'm so psyched to hear about Demon's Souls. looks like my kind of game :3
yeah, don't sweat it. I know what it's like -___-
it might be good idea to wait with Gold until there's one or two more games to play anyway ~~
I just hope I can afford Borderlands soon. maybe not on release but after Dragon Age has been thoroughly beaten and sexually harassed by yours truly <3
Yeah, I'm psyched about Demon's Souls as well because I want to rise to the challenge and make all the Knights from the North proud. I paid ten dollars extra for the awesome Deluxe Edition.
Basically I'll be getting gold when I get some game/games we can actually play together without having to resort to old classics such as Gears 2. ^^
Yeah, I hope Borderlands turns out great because it seems to be fun to coop. Dragon Age I don't know about until I see some reviews and then I have to decide if I should aim to get it once I have a new PC or if the console versions are actually good. Choices, choices. =(
I'm proud of you. tell us of your deeds when the time comes ^__^
yeah, that sounds like a good idea. else you'd basically just waste Gold days playing sp games.
we're still going strong on Gears2 right now, AVP finally unplugged his thumb and got the map packs.
after watching that 30 minute video I'm basically sold on the coop experience.
yeah, I'm a bit concerned about the console version of Dragon Age, but since I'm such a Biowanker I couldn't help but preorder it for my 360, that and I don't see myself buying a new PC anytime soon. But I bet the PC version will be superior, it's just a matter of how good it will handle on console as well ^__^
and man, i WANT Demon's Souls xD
what's up with the guy in the video smelling everything XD
the strategy guide looks cool. not for being a strategy guide per say, but all the images, lists of weapons and items etc, I wish I had one of those for Bladestorm >__>
OK, I'll tell you all about the glorious battles in which I'll get brutally murdered. ;)
Yeah, the problem with Gold is that you feel like a retard if you own multiple system and they take away your time and you're basically paying for nothing. M$ should have a plan for people like me so I can as much as I use the service.
I didn't watch the whole thing but from what I did watch the coop integration looked really awesome and well done. Should be alot more fun to level grind in that game. =)
Well I hope it turns out great for consoles since it would be cheaper for me and more convenient but Bioware has me worried since they called the console versions more "action-oriented" in a recent interview. What the hell is that suppose to mean?! =S
You can come and visit me again soon once I get it if you want to try it? ^^
That guy is awesome, he knows how to do a proper unboxing of something. Smelling the new stuff is the best part of that! =D Yeah, I agree, ten buck extra for an awesome guide and art-book is worth it; that's like 69 kr at the moment. I can't wait til I get this and Uncharted 2.
sweet!
exactly, but they wouldn't make money of off that, or so they believe :<
aight, the last part of the video he shows a re-run through with a high level character. it's awesome that you can just keep going through it all again and the enemies lvl up and the loot gets better.
yes, as soon as I get CSN again I will plan a trip to molest you and eat your cremé fraiche <3
that's wierd? how the fuck are they suppose to do that? cut out dialouge!? :0 I SURE HOPE NOT!
hell yes, I'm so gonna do that with Dragon Age (smell everything and play fittingly epic music to it as well).
